With this capability, individuals will be able to initiate conversations by sharing their username instead of their phone number.
To access this feature, users need to update their WhatsApp application and navigate to Settings > Account > Username. The company plans to notify users when the feature becomes available in their specific regions. Unlike other social media platforms, WhatsApp will not implement a public search directory for usernames. This design choice ensures that only those who know the exact username can initiate contact, thereby minimizing spam and unwanted messages.
In addition to username reservation, WhatsApp is introducing an optional username key that offers users additional control over who can initiate chats with them. Importantly, the use of usernames on WhatsApp will be optional, allowing users the choice to continue utilizing their phone numbers if they prefer.
