Indonesia has taken a significant step in the realm of artificial intelligence by becoming a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO). This move signifies the country’s dedication to fostering global collaboration in AI. During discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Indonesia’s Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto showcased his country’s commitment to establishing a governance framework for AI that emphasizes equitable development, human-focused innovation, and adherence to United Nations principles.
In a bid to strengthen its role within the organization, Indonesia proposed securing a senior position in WAICO’s secretariat. The discussions also touched upon enhancing cooperation with China, focusing on key areas such as artificial intelligence, investment, and trade. Minister Airlangga highlighted the need for swifter market access for Indonesian exports and encouraged Chinese companies to boost their investments in sectors like advanced manufacturing, the digital economy, and industrial parks.
Additionally, Indonesia expressed its support for China’s upcoming 2026 chairmanship of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). Minister Airlangga suggested organizing a bilateral business summit to coincide with a forthcoming meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Chinese President Xi Jinping. This summit aims to deepen economic ties between the two nations.
