A new artificial intelligence tool has been developed by doctors to analyze routine electrocardiograms (ECGs) rapidly, identifying patients who are at a high risk of heart failure and heart valve disease in less than two seconds. This innovative technology, trained on millions of ECGs, is designed to detect subtle patterns often missed by standard assessments.
In a significant trial involving 67,000 patients across the United States, the AI demonstrated its efficacy by identifying up to 81% of individuals with heart failure and up to 90% with heart valve disease. This advancement is particularly noteworthy because ECGs are among the most common medical tests, with approximately one billion conducted globally each year. Despite their widespread use, patients suspected of heart disease frequently face long wait times for echocardiograms, which are more definitive tests.
The AI tool is not meant to replace comprehensive diagnostic procedures but aims to assist healthcare providers in pinpointing high-risk patients who should be prioritized for echocardiograms and additional testing. By doing so, it has the potential to expedite the initiation of necessary treatments. Researchers are optimistic that this technology could also be utilized to review ECGs conducted for unrelated medical issues, uncovering previously undetected heart conditions.
Looking ahead, the development team is investigating the possibility of creating portable, AI-powered ECG devices for use by healthcare professionals. Such advancements could make the early detection of heart conditions more efficient and accessible, transforming the current landscape of cardiovascular care.
