Indonesia is actively working with the United States to ensure the repatriation of American pilot Nicholas F. Goselin, who tragically lost his life in a violent incident instigated by Papua separatists in Yahukimo. The attack was claimed by the armed faction of the Free Papua Movement, which asserted that it targeted the aircraft due to an alleged breach of a ban on civilian flights over certain controlled territories. The separatists accused civilian aircraft of facilitating Indonesian military efforts by transporting troops and supplies.
Following the attack, the aircraft, which was operated by PT AMA, was set ablaze. Fortunately, all seven Indonesian passengers on board survived unscathed, while the authorities managed to recover and evacuate the body of the pilot. The Indonesian Foreign Ministry has confirmed its collaboration with the US Embassy in Jakarta along with other pertinent agencies to ensure consular access and arrange the repatriation of the pilot’s remains.
