Malaysia is poised to bolster its economic ties with China, as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim embarks on a strategic visit to Shanghai and Hangzhou. This three-day working trip seeks to enhance Malaysia-China relations, expand trade, and foster cooperation in emerging technologies, with potential significant economic benefits for Malaysia.
Prime Minister Anwar’s itinerary includes high-level talks with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, emphasizing the importance of their bilateral relationship. With China being Malaysia’s largest trading partner for 17 consecutive years, the meeting underscores the ongoing commitment to strengthening economic collaborations. From January to August this year alone, bilateral trade between the two nations reached an impressive US$113.82 billion.
During his visit to Shanghai, Anwar is set to attend the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 event and deliver a keynote speech at the WorldSkills Conference, highlighting Malaysia’s strategic focus on skills development. The prime minister will then travel to Hangzhou to participate in the Fifth Global Digital Trade Expo, where Malaysia is recognized as one of the Guest Countries of Honour.
