Iran has leveled accusations against Qatar, claiming that the Gulf nation is hindering investigations into the disappearance of three Iranian pilots during a recent conflict. In response, Qatar has denied these allegations, asserting that it does not hold any Iranian pilots. The Iranian armed forces official, Mohammad Bagherzadeh, revealed that an expert team from the Iranian Air Force has been awaiting permission for months to travel to Qatar and probe the situation. He appealed to Doha to facilitate the team’s visit and urged the International Committee of the Red Cross to pursue the matter further.
Iran has previously managed to recover the body of pilot Majid Kazemi, who lost his life during an attack involving the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. However, the whereabouts of the other pilots remain uncertain. In contrast, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, has vehemently denied the detention of Iranian pilots. Al-Ansari stated that when the pilots allegedly breached Qatari airspace, Qatar attempted to communicate with them but received no response, prompting defensive actions.
Qatar reported that its search and rescue teams were dispatched to locate the missing pilots and their remains. Furthermore, Doha claimed that it had coordinated with Iran regarding the transfer of the remains of one pilot, which had been successfully recovered. Despite these efforts, Qatar maintains that Iranian authorities have not yet responded to an invitation extended in April to send a team to receive detailed information about the search and rescue operations conducted in Qatar.
The disagreement between Iran and Qatar unfolds amid ongoing tensions involving Iran, the United States, and other regional nations following the conflict that erupted earlier in the year.
