Malaysia is on standby to send DNA experts to Nepal to assist in identifying victims of recent catastrophic floods and landslides, pending approval from Nepali authorities. Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan announced the country’s intent to deploy these specialists, who are prepared to start DNA identification once search and rescue operations conclude. This initiative aims to match DNA from recovered bodies with that of families of missing Malaysian nationals.
In preparation, Malaysia has already gathered DNA samples from the relatives of 55 Malaysians who are still missing due to the natural disasters. The urgency for DNA testing has increased as some bodies were hastily buried because of limited available facilities, making traditional identification impossible. This approach is crucial to confirming identities and bringing closure to the families affected.
The Malaysian team designated for this mission comprises 11 personnel equipped with 12.4 tonnes of advanced rescue equipment. This includes cutting-edge detection tools, communication systems, high-capacity drones, and specialized tunnel-rescue gear. Additionally, they are supported by a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to aid in their operations.
Through these comprehensive efforts in search, rescue, and DNA identification, Malaysia aims to locate missing individuals and deliver definitive answers to their families regarding the fate of their loved ones. The deployment of this well-equipped team underscores Malaysia’s commitment to aiding its citizens and supporting Nepal during this challenging time.
