During this visit to Hanoi, Min Aung Hlaing is scheduled to meet with Vietnamese President To Lam and other high-ranking officials. He will also participate in a business forum alongside members of his Cabinet.
The relationship between Myanmar and Vietnam has historically included strong military and economic ties, although there has been a significant decline in bilateral trade in recent years. As Myanmar seeks to rebuild its regional connections, the country is eager to boost economic cooperation and attract new investments. Since assuming the presidency in April, Min Aung Hlaing has amplified his diplomatic efforts, traveling to multiple countries across Asia and Europe. His current outreach to Vietnam comes in the wake of strained relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) following Myanmar’s military takeover in 2021. Myanmar’s exclusion from high-level ASEAN meetings was due to its failure to implement the bloc’s peace plan.
The Myanmar leader’s visit to Vietnam is another step in an ongoing attempt to restore regional ties and improve the nation’s international image. The country’s leadership is keen to overcome diplomatic challenges and counteract the impact of Western sanctions, which were imposed on Min Aung Hlaing and his associates due to the military takeover and subsequent human rights violations.
