In a series of Russian drone and missile attacks on Kyiv and its surrounding areas, at least 12 people have lost their lives. This marks the sixth consecutive night of intensified strikes targeting Ukraine’s capital and its critical infrastructure. Among the victims, eight were killed in Kyiv, including six railway workers at a depot, while four others died near Boryspil. The assaults also left several people injured, including children.
Ukrainian authorities reported that the overnight offensive involved a substantial number of drones and ballistic missiles, with Kyiv and Odesa as primary targets. Although Ukraine’s air defenses managed to intercept a significant portion of the incoming threats, multiple strikes still managed to hit their intended locations. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted that Russia is exploiting the current shortage of US-made Patriot air-defense interceptors, which are crucial for countering high-speed ballistic missiles, to enhance the impact of their attacks.
The recent assaults have had a severe impact on Ukraine’s railway network, with six railway employees killed at the depot, and infrastructure damaged, disrupting essential services. This escalation of attacks has forced residents into shelters for extended periods, further affecting daily life in Kyiv. Ukrainian officials have noted an increase in the use of jet-powered drones by Russia, which pose a greater challenge to intercept.
In response to these ongoing strikes, Ukraine has launched counterattacks targeting Russian military and energy infrastructure, including oil facilities and warehouses, as part of efforts to exert both economic and military pressure on Moscow. Despite these measures, the conflict remains at a stalemate on the battlefield, with little advancement towards a diplomatic resolution. Ukrainian officials are calling on Western allies for additional air-defense systems, especially as winter approaches.
On the international stage, efforts to resolve the conflict remain limited. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently encouraged Russian President Vladimir Putin to work towards ending the war, emphasizing the necessity of shifting focus from continued hostilities to achieving peace.
