The U.S. aviation authorities have mandated inspections of Boeing 737 Max aircraft to check for potential cracks in a key structural part of the fuselage. This directive will apply to around 471 planes, with inspections set to commence in September. The focus is on the bear strap, a structural element that provides support around the exit doors of the aircraft. This action follows similar issues found in the older Boeing 737 Next Generation models, which also underwent scrutiny for this problem.

Although no cracks have been documented in the 737 Max models to date, regulators emphasized that the aircraft shares a similar design and manufacturing process with the Next Generation series, raising the possibility of similar defects developing. The aviation authority highlighted the risk that undetected cracks could compromise a crucial structural component, potentially affecting the structural integrity of the aircraft.

Boeing has been addressing this issue collaboratively with airlines since it was first identified in 2019. The company expressed its support for the mandatory inspections, noting that these checks are intended to detect and address any issues before they escalate to critical levels.
