World Bank Highlights Tech Challenges Amid Cambodia’s Slower Economic Growth

Cambodia’s economy is experiencing mounting challenges, despite securing over $5 billion in foreign direct investment in 2025. This influx of foreign capital has played a pivotal role in stabilizing the economy and has been instrumental in generating approximately 400,000 jobs. However, the nation is grappling with rising fuel costs, escalating inflation, and a deceleration in the construction sector, all of which are exerting pressure on its economic growth.

Inflation soared to nearly 6 percent in April, significantly affecting the prices of essential goods and disproportionately impacting low-income households. A report warned that a 10 percent hike in fuel prices could exacerbate poverty levels, while the ongoing slump in housing and construction activities continues to be a drag on the economy. The World Bank projects Cambodia’s GDP growth to be 3.9 percent in 2026, with a potential rebound to 4.9 percent in 2027.

The economic slowdown is further compounded by the return of around 500,000 Cambodian migrant workers from Thailand, leading to a reduction in remittance inflows that many households rely on. In response to these multifaceted challenges, the World Bank has recommended several measures aimed at stabilizing the economy. These include safeguarding livelihoods, job creation, accelerating structural reforms, improving governance, and enhancing productivity.

Furthermore, the World Bank has suggested the reduction of fuel taxes, ensuring the timely import of fertilizers for farmers, and enhancing domestic revenue to bolster spending on critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and social services. The report underscored the importance of maintaining household incomes and supporting citizens in meeting their daily living expenses as a paramount priority for policymakers.
