In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng engaged in talks with Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing during his visit to Hà Nội on September 5. This visit marked Min Aung Hlaing’s first official trip to Vietnam in his new capacity, and the meeting underscored a shared commitment to enhancing cooperation across various sectors. Prime Minister Hưng expressed Vietnam’s unwavering support for Myanmar’s aspirations towards stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic growth.
President Min Aung Hlaing commended Vietnam’s socio-economic progress and its rising stature on the regional and international stage, expressing a keen interest in learning from Vietnam’s development experiences. He reiterated Myanmar’s dedication to sustaining its longstanding friendship and expansive cooperation with Vietnam. The leaders acknowledged the recent advances in their bilateral relationship and agreed to intensify high-level exchanges and foster greater political trust. They emphasized the importance of reinstating key cooperative frameworks in trade, security, and defense.
Defense and security emerged as pivotal areas of collaboration, with both nations committed to enhancing joint efforts against cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. Plans are underway to expand military training programs, facilitate young officer exchanges, and address non-traditional security challenges. Economic engagement was another focal point of the discussions, as both sides explored avenues to bolster trade and update existing agreements related to trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar encouraged Vietnamese investments in sectors like telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure.
The leaders also deliberated on improving infrastructure and air connectivity, with an emphasis on restoring direct flights and developing collaborative tourism initiatives, including spiritual and medical tourism. On the regional front, Vietnam committed to continued collaboration with ASEAN members to promote dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both leaders expressed support for resolving disputes peacefully and in accordance with international law. Prime Minister Hưng extended an invitation to President Min Aung Hlaing to participate in the CLMV Summit and chair the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội in November 2026, while also accepting an invitation to visit Myanmar at a mutually agreeable time.
