Thailand has issued a warning that its efforts to mend relations with Cambodia may be hindered if border disputes continue to be highlighted on international stages. Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow expressed concerns that ongoing allegations against Thailand in global forums could potentially damage the trust-building initiatives between the two neighboring countries.
This caution from Thailand follows remarks made by Cambodia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Keo Chhea, during a UN Security Council session. Chhea highlighted the humanitarian impacts of past border conflicts between Cambodia and Thailand, including civilian displacements, destruction of homes and infrastructure, and damage to the historic Preah Vihear Temple, a site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Thailand responded to these statements by describing them as biased and not in line with the spirit of a joint agreement signed in late 2025. This agreement was designed to foster reconciliation and restore confidence between the two nations. Thailand emphasized its commitment to this accord and expressed its expectation that both parties adhere to its principles.
In response, Cambodian government spokesperson Pen Bona reiterated Cambodia’s dedication to resolving border issues through peaceful dialogue, adherence to international law, and honoring existing ceasefire agreements. This stance underlines Cambodia’s ongoing support for diplomatic solutions to the long-standing border tensions.
The border disputes between Thailand and Cambodia, particularly those surrounding the areas near the Preah Vihear Temple, have been a source of strain in bilateral relations over the years.
