New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung are exploring the possibility of a visit by Mamdani to Jakarta. This follows their recent meeting in New York, where they discussed shared urban challenges such as public transportation, traffic congestion, and urban development financing.
While there is no official confirmation of the visit, discussions are ongoing, and an announcement will be made once plans are finalized, according to Pramono. The potential visit could coincide with a conference scheduled in Jakarta for late October.
During their meeting at the U20 Mayors Summit, Mamdani expressed interest in Jakarta’s strategies to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance public transportation. Pramono highlighted the development of the Transjabodetabek, a regional transportation network aimed at better connectivity between Jakarta and its surrounding areas.
In addition to transportation issues, the two leaders addressed municipal financing. Pramono shared Jakarta’s plans to launch municipal bonds, referred to as Jakarta Bonds, to support infrastructure and development projects. Mamdani proposed facilitating collaboration between the finance teams of New York and Jakarta to share expertise on municipal bond issuance.
