Renowned Canadian voice actor Peter Cullen, celebrated for his iconic roles as Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise and Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh series, has passed away at 85. His family announced that Cullen died peacefully at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday, surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Montreal, Cullen embarked on his career in Canadian television and radio, eventually becoming one of the most distinguished voices in the entertainment industry. He first brought life to the character of Optimus Prime in the 1984 Transformers animated series. Cullen’s portrayal of the revered Autobot leader continued through seven Hollywood films from 2007 to 2023, as well as numerous spin-offs. His portrayal of Eeyore, the lovable yet gloomy donkey, in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and various related projects, further cemented his status in popular culture.
Beyond these roles, Cullen’s impressive repertoire included voicing KARR, the sinister counterpart to KITT, in the television series Knight Rider. He also contributed to the 1987 action film Predator by providing the creature’s distinctive clicking sounds and gave voice to King Kong in the 1976 remake.
Cullen’s depiction of Optimus Prime was significantly influenced by his older brother Larry, a former US Marine Corps captain, who advised him to portray the character as a hero embodying strength without aggression. This guidance helped shape Optimus Prime’s unique personality, resonating with audiences and earning Cullen a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011. His contributions to the field were further acknowledged with a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023.
