Malaysia is taking steps to address the Myanmar refugee issue with a focus on prioritizing national security and the well-being of its citizens, according to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The government is collaborating with Myanmar on a voluntary and phased repatriation plan for refugees, while also strengthening enforcement and coordination among relevant agencies and countries of origin.

In recent discussions, both Malaysia and Myanmar agreed to initiate the voluntary return of 5,000 refugees in stages. The initial phase involves 1,476 refugees who have started the repatriation process after meeting the agreed-upon procedures between the two countries.

Prime Minister Anwar highlighted that the refugee situation has been a persistent challenge for Malaysia, exerting pressure on the nation’s security infrastructure, social services, and administrative capacities. The government’s strategy will adhere to national laws while incorporating humanitarian considerations.

Anwar emphasized that addressing the refugee issue is crucial for balancing Malaysia’s internal interests with its humanitarian responsibilities. The approach aims to ensure that while the country’s security is safeguarded, the process remains compassionate and respectful of the refugees’ circumstances.
